Aquile inedite dall’antica Cattedrale di Laus: ipotesi ricostruttive e contesto monumentale

Abstract

ABSTRACT: l’articolo presenta cinque rilievi inediti con aquile, attualmente inseriti nel percorso espositivo del museo archeologico Laus Pompeia di Lodi Vecchio, inaugurato nel 2014. Essi provengono dall’antica cattedrale, distrutta nel 1879. Le caratteristiche dei pezzi e le loro dimensioni hanno consentito di ricostruire la decorazione di un archivolto di portale, pertinente all’ecclesia mater di Laus o ai suoi annessi. Le aquile vengono datate agli inizi del XII secolo in base a confronti stilistici. Questa datazione le collega con il cantiere della chiesa romanica, che ricostruisce, probabilmente ampliandolo, un più antico edificio di culto, di cui le indagini archeologiche hanno messo in luce parte delle strutture murarie. I rilievi qui presentati sono, ad oggi, l’unica testimonianza dell’apparato decorativo dell’antico duomo e ciò, se da un lato ne accresce l’importanza documentale, dall’altro rende più difficile coglierne appieno il valore “comunicativo” che la sequenza narrativa proposta comunque indica, facendo già intravedere una fitta trama di corrispondenze con fonti letterarie, oggetto di un approfondimento che si presenterà in altra sede.

ABSTRACT: the paper deals with five unpublished reliefs with eagles now included in the exhibition itinerary of the Laus Pompeia archaeological museum in Lodi Vecchio, inaugurated in 2014. They come from the ancient cathedral, definitively destroyed in 1879. The characteristics of the pieces and their dimensions made it possible to reconstruct the decoration of a portal archivolt, belonging to ecclesia mater of Laus or its annexes. These eagles are dated to the early 12th century on the basis of stylistic comparisons. This dating connects them with the romanesque church, a reconstruction and probably an enlargement of an older church, which the archaeological excavations have brought to light. The reliefs presented here are, to date, the only document of the decorative apparatus of the ancient cathedral and this, if on the one hand increases their documentary importance, on the other hand makes more difficult to understand fully their “communicative” value, which the proposed narrative sequence, however, indicates, already giving a glimpse of a dense network of correspondences with literary sources, the subject of an in-depth study that will be presented elsewhere.
